Cisco Equipment:  Refurbished Or New?

Not sure whether you should buy your Cisco equipment new or refurbished?  Here are six reasons to opt for the latter.

From purchasing a vehicle to household appliances, the question always comes up – Should I purchase something new or used?

In the past, when price shopping involved more legwork and phone calls, it may have been difficult to see just how much you could actually save.  In this day and age, a quick search online can give you some eye-opening reasons to opt for refurbished goods.

This is especially the case when it involves electronic equipment such as routers and switches.  For example, a search for a new Cisco C881 Router with 4 ports can cost you close to £300, while the same refurbished Cisco router can be found for well under £200.

While there are obvious reasons such as cost savings to opt for refurbished Cisco equipment, Cisco switches and Cisco routers, there are many other reasons and benefits to go the used route.

Let’s take a closer look at six of them.

Reason #1:  Cost Savings

This is by far the top reason you may want to consider refurbished Cisco equipment.  If you are on a budget, need the equipment and need to save a bit of money then this will be one of the best options for you.

While the benefits are great, there are even greater benefits to purchasing refurbished Cisco equipment, if you are a business owner.

You see, it’s very rare that you’ll need just one piece of equipment.  More often than not, you may have multiple locations and may need multiple pieces of equipment.

If you are being conservative with the example above of the CISCO2911 Router, and purchased four for different office locations, you would have easily saved yourself several hundreds of pounds.  Keep in mind that this is for just ONE piece of equipment.  Think of all the other pieces of equipment your business needs.  Can you see the possibilities?

The BIG Benefit:  You’ll be able to use the extra money you save on other business or personal expenses.

Reason #2:  You’ll Know It Works

This may sound silly, but have you ever bought something, gotten home extremely excited and gotten…nothing.  Zilch.  Zip. Nada.

You either have had this experience or someone you know has.  This is the reason why some areas have instituted the lemon law.  For those times when you purchase something that just doesn’t function like it should or doesn’t function at all.

When you purchase something such as a used vehicle, there is something blindingly obvious:  In the past, that vehicle ACTUALLY ran.  When it comes to electronic equipment that can be downright confounding such as Cisco switches and routers, you want something you know works.

Refurbished equipment HAS worked in the past, and more often than not, the vendor selling it has already put it through some stringent testing to ensure that it can be indeed resold.

The BIG Benefit:  You won’t have to concern yourself with the worry that the equipment may need to be returned because it doesn’t work.  Someone has already tested it to ensure that it does.

Reason #3:  You’ll Get Exactly What You Are Looking For

There are some things in our lives that we just grow accustomed to.  These can be things such as the cars we drive or the computers we use.  Unfortunately, over time, the companies that produced these things just stop doing so and move on to other models.

Where does this leave the owner?  Left to try to get parts that “should” fit, buy the newest model or scour the internet for someone hopefully selling the EXACT same product.

If you are the kind of person that knows what he or she likes and wants, and doesn’t want to change a thing, then going the refurbished route may be one that you want to consider.

Well, there just may be a chance that once you start looking to replace the equipment you have come to rely on, that it may no longer be in stock with your favorite retailer.  If you are having difficulty locating it, then your only option will be to turn to a vendor specializing in refurbished equipment.

The BIG Benefit:  It’s pretty obvious – You’ll get what you are looking for.  No guesswork needed here, you’ll know that what arrives at your doorstep is exactly what you have had in the past.

Reason #4:  It’s A Name You Can Rely On

When it comes to used equipment, you’d much rather get something from a leader in the marketplace, as opposed to an unknown.

It’s like the difference between buying a used Toyota or a used vehicle from an unknown manufacturer such as Peel

There are certain names and brands that we as consumers have come to know and trust.  For example, when you hear names such as:

  • Sony
  • Coca Cola
  • Mercedes
  • Apple
  • Dell

What do you instantly think of?

If you are like most, then you think of the products that they create.  This brand recognition speaks to the trust factor that we as consumers have when it comes to bigger, well known and respected brands.

When it comes to electronic equipment, Cisco is no different.  Even consumers who know little about Routers and Switches, know the name Cisco.  There’s also a very good chance that there is already a piece of Cisco Equipment sitting in their home, workplace or business.

The BIG Benefit:  It’s a name you can trust.  It’s a buying decision that you won’t question yourself over.  It’s a purchase that you’ll feel good about.

Reason #5:  You Get To Choose The Best Model

Reviews are great.

Just take a look at large shopping sites or online review sites and you can see what people are saying about specific products.

You need to be careful however and ensure that the reviews you are reading are legitimate ones.

Now, once you have found those, you can easily read through them to pick and choose to see which models are the best of the several you may be considering.  It’s like car shopping, there are certain years for certain models that just plain outperform other years.  Surprisingly enough, there are times when the older models are the ones that are preferred.

In some cases, newer doesn’t always mean better.  When it comes to refurbished Cisco switches and routers, there may be some on your list that you have been considering for some time.

When it comes down to it, the older better performing models may no longer be in stock, which is when you will need to turn to a vendor that carries refurbished equipment.  Not only will you be able to get it at a cheaper price, BUT you’ll also get the cream of the crop, the best of the best…okay, enough with the clichés, you get the point.

The BIG Benefit:  You get the pick of the litter (sorry, had to put in one more!).  The obvious benefit here is that you’ll be able to select the model that does the best, outperforms the others and is the proven winner.

Reason #6:  All The Good And None Of The Bad

Wouldn’t it be great if in everything you bought, you’d get all of the good and none of the bad?  Unfortunately, in many things, this just isn’t the case.  Until now, that is.

See, here’s the thing with refurbished Cisco equipment.

You get all of the good:

  • A name you can trust and rely on
  • Knowing it works, and works well because the kit is fully tested to ensure that it is ABSOLUTELY 100% working
  • Cleaned inside and out
  • Refurbished case that looks new
  • Big savings on cost

You also get none of the bad:

  • Won’t have to pay higher prices attached to brand new equipment
  • Won’t have to worry that it may not work out of the box

It’s a win-win situation when you really think about it.  You get the “new” feel and use, without the price tag that would normally come with it.

It would be one thing to buy something used, but when you buy it refurbished, then you know that some extra time and extra special care went into ensuring that your product is as close to new as possible.  All of course done without the cost that would normally come with a brand new piece of equipment.

The BIG Benefit:  It’s also pretty obvious here, that with tested, cleaned and refurbished kits, that you are getting all of the good with none of the bad.  It’s almost like a slightly used car. It’s still pretty new, runs well and has been tested and checked, oh and the BIG savings you get is a pretty nice added benefit as well.

What Now?

As you can see, the cost savings alone isn’t the only reason why you may want to purchase refurbished Cisco equipment such as switches and routers.

While we can’t come out and say that refurbished goods will be exactly the same as new, what we can say is that they come pretty close, but with some added benefits as well.

We hope that the six reasons and six benefits above have helped to show you that.
